Beating stress

Our bodies can only handle so much stress. When we reach a breaking point, stress can make us sick. Skipping meals, acting irritable and moody, not getting enough sleep - things like this can all add up and lead to health problems, such as high blood pressure, headaches, or nausea. Our immune system may also weaken and make us more susceptible to colds and flu.

Sometimes, stress can be a part of a larger problem. Depression, for instance, shares some symptoms with stress.

Build up your defenses and create a long-term plan for reducing stress. If you depend on things like cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine, or medications to help you through tense times, replace them with some healthier coping habits.

Aside from healthy diet, sleep, and exercise, there are lots of things you can do that will teach you how to relax, even during stressful situations. Try out activities like yoga or meditation, or a combination of hobbies that not only calm you down in the moment, but also build up your defenses against future stress.
