Managing your medications

Medications are supposed to help you or make you feel better. What can you do when keeping track of this medication, or that pill, or this ointment is becoming more of a pain than a benefit? Finding strategies to manage your medication can relieve loads of stress and, possibly, save your life.

Taking your medication really matters. If you forget a dose or take too much or too little, you could be putting your health at risk. For the medications you are currently required to take, you should set up some sort of medication reminder system - a checklist or calendar that helps you stick to a well-run routine. Have some medication routine backup plans, too, for when you are away from home or on vacation. There are 10 things you must know about your medication, including what to do if you forget a dose.

Once you've organized your daily medications, find out what you need to know about clearing out your medicine cabinet. Discard what's out-of-date or stock up on items that are missing.

Next, get to know what's left in your medicine cabinet. If there are items that you're unclear about, don't hesitate to take your medication into the pharmacy and ask your pharmacist some questions. That's something you should always do whenever you begin a new medication or get an update to an existing medication.
