Relaxation/meditation

Stress can swell and overflow. A worry about work can grow and grow on the ride home and burst into an argument with your spouse. The argument with your spouse and the worry from work can drift into your mind at bedtime, leaving you sleepless. The sleepless night can flood into work the next morning. You get the picture. When does it stop?

You may be inclined to escape it all by zoning out in front of the television or surfing the net, but to feel a state of bodily relief, reduced tension, and calmness, you have to set aside a time to truly relax. Schedule it into your busy calendar if you need to!

Sometimes interrupting the flow of stress takes mindfulness and intention. Try yoga, breathing exercises, or meditation. It may seem dull or pointless, but meditation helps to reduce stress and the symptoms of stress-related conditions. It's more than just sitting still with your eyes closed. It's a time to refresh and calm your mind.

You don't have to take courses or read books about meditation to feel the advantages. You can try simple breathing and counting exercises. The benefits of relaxation will really show in the moments away from the calm and quiet of meditation. Whenever you are stressed, you will know how to take a moment to soothe yourself and refocus your awareness.
