Getting a good night's sleep

Modern life is busy and full of stress - things to do, places to be, and high expectations to meet. It's hard enough to keep up with realistic expectations! If your hectic schedule causes you to miss out on the benefits of healthy sleep, you're putting yourself at a possibly dangerous disadvantage.

Losing sleep can cause irritability, slower reaction time, and increased stress. And long-term sleep depravation may lead to a weakened immune system, depression, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Your body needs adequate rest in order to repair itself after a day of dealing with life and its stresses. There are signs to watch for; ways that your body will tell you that it is not getting enough sleep. Take heed of lack-of-sleep warnings, such as dark circles under your eyes, early morning headaches, or dozing off in public places.

Strategies for getting the sleep you need include avoiding caffeine, TV, and other stimulants before bed, and transforming a cluttered or noisy bedroom into a "sleep-friendly" oasis with a comfy mattress and foam earplugs. Insomnia treatments often emphasize stress reduction, good sleep hygiene, and strategic use of sleep-promoting medications.

No matter which method works for you, it's important to get back into a good sleep groove. Healthy sleep is one of life's most affordable and natural stress-busters.
